Lineas welcomes renewed 750-meter tracks at Bundel Mercator: a key step for modal shift and the economy
Brussels, September 18, 2025 - Lineas welcomes the commissioning of six renewed 750-meter tracks at Bundel Mercator, the second most important rail yard in the Port of Ghent. This €12.5 million investment by Infrabel, supported by the Belgian federal government and the European Union, is a crucial milestone for efficient and sustainable rail freight in North Sea Port.
The new long tracks meet European standards and allow full 750-meter trains to arrive, be assembled and depart. This directly increases operational efficiency, reduces costs and strengthens the competitiveness of companies in the port area such as Volvo, ArcelorMittal and DFDS.
Bundel Mercator is strategically located between the John F. Kennedylaan and the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal, near the Mercator dock. With nearly 4,000 train movements in 2022, capacity had reached its limits. The upgraded yard now provides more flexibility, smoother access to terminals and lays the foundation for future growth.
Every freight train removes up to 50 trucks from the road. By shifting freight from road to rail, this project directly contributes to Europe’s modal shift strategy. The societal benefits are clear: less congestion, lower CO₂ emissions, fewer accidents, and reduced road maintenance costs. According to studies, every €1 invested in rail generates €2.83 for the economy.
