Lineas' LORO connection aims to mitigate traffic congestion in and around the port of Antwerp

Traffic density in and around the Port of Antwerp is steadily increasing. Lineas' LORO (Linkeroever-Rechteroever, or Left Bank - Right Bank) connection offers a ready-made solution to the current congestion issues.

Traffic congestion in the Antwerp area continues to increase due to, among other things, the economic recovery. Together with the ongoing and planned roadworks, this is leading to worsening traffic conditions. In addition to the work on the Oosterweel connection, work is now also starting on the Beveren tunnel: this tunnel will be closed in the direction of Ghent for a whole year from July, which will result in further detours. Additional traffic jams in the direction of the port therefore seem unavoidable, with all their consequences.

Lineas offers an effective solution to these problems, with its LORO connection from the MainHub terminal. This shuttle provides a fast daily train connection from the MainHub on the right bank via the Liefkenshoek rail tunnel to both quay 1700 and quay 1742 at the Deurganck dock, and vice versa.

Lineas, the only operator in Belgium to offer such a connection, transports around 50,000 TEU per year via this fast and efficient link: this year alone, a total of 320 trains traveled between the two banks of the Scheldt carrying 8,500 containers, representing a total weight of around 300,000 tons.

The congestion-free MainHub terminal guarantees fast throughput, so that companies do not have to worry about delays caused by congestion. The terminal also meets strict safety standards and is fully secured and monitored. A firm assurance for the safety of goods during transportation and storage.

On the right bank, the containers transported by the LORO shuttle are then connected to Lineas' network, so that they can continue their journey to important European markets such as France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and Romania.

"Lineas focuses on customer-oriented solutions that contribute to efficient and sustainable logistics. Our LORO connection via the MainHub terminal is just one example of how we are helping to reduce traffic congestion and optimize freight flows to and from Antwerp and beyond," said Luc Kerckaert, Senior Sales Manager at Lineas.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges also sees music in this solution. "Lineas' MainHub terminal offers a valuable solution to the increasing traffic congestion. By choosing alternative modes of transport and reliable partners like Lineas, we contribute to smoother and more sustainable logistics in our ports," explains William Demoor, Chief Customer Relations Officer of Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
